「モノを掘って 触って 感じて 手を汚さないとダメですよ」篠遠喜彦博士。 ハワイにあるビショップ・ミュージアムに篠遠先生を訪ねた。2011年11月のこと。研究室の前の薄暗い廊下にはダンボールが積まれ、入り口には魚の形をした木彫りの名札がかかっていた。87歳になられた篠遠先生に柔和な表情で迎えられ、お話をうかがうことができた。この映像はその時のもので、ざっくばらんな口調ながら、研究への情熱が端々にほとばしり出る語りとなっている。60数年間に及ぶ研究生活を振り返って語られたのだが、最晩年のお話として貴重なものとなった。 　篠遠喜彦（1924〜2017）は太平洋、特にポリネシアの考古学に大きな足跡を残した考古学者だ。1954年にハワイに来てから逝去するまで、「太平洋に人類はいかにして拡散していったのか」を探求し続けた。日本で縄文考古学を研究していた篠遠喜彦は、ポリネシアでは正統な考古学研究がなされていないことを知り、愕然とする。太平洋の孤島に渡り、発掘をして、次々と貴重な遺物を収集し、そこから島々の歴史を編年していった。研究の功績は数え切れないほどある。その一端を映像から読んでいただきたい。（記：門田…
