イスラエル人、メイル・マーガレットは、東エルサレムでイスラエル当局にパレスチナ人の家屋が破壊される現場に立ち、「イスラエル国民として、ユダヤ人として恥ずかしい」とつぶやいた。 メイルはエルサレム市議会議員を辞任した後、パレスチナ人の住居破壊を阻止するNGOのスタッフとして活動を続けてきた。それはホロコーストで祖父とその家族を失ったユダヤ人の子孫として、“正義”を守る闘いだった。住居を破壊されるパレスチナ人の怯え絶望する表情が、ナチの兵士に連行されるユダヤ人の表情とメイルの中で重なるのだ。 アルゼンチンのユダヤ人社会に生まれ育ったメイルは、熱烈なシオニストになった。「ユダヤ人の祖国のために貢献したい」と、18歳の時イスラエルに移住した。その直後、兵役に就き、第四次中東戦争に参戦。そこで犠牲になっていく若い兵士たちを姿を目の当たりにしたメイルの中で、「祖国イスラエルの政策」に疑問を抱き始める。 「熱烈なシオニスト、愛国者」から「占領政策に反対する左派」に変化していく一人のユダヤ人の軌跡を追ったドキュメンタリー。
約7万人のパレスチナ人が暮らす東エルサレムのシルワン地区。しかし旧市街に最も近いこの地区を、イスラエル当局やユダヤ人入植者団体は「ダビデの町」と呼び、住民の追い出しを画策している。 その手段の一つが住居の「建設許可」制度だ。住民の４割の住居が当局の「許可」がない「違法建築物」として「家屋破壊」を宣告されている。実際、過去10年間で約340戸の住居が破壊された。一方、住民が「許可」を申請してもほとんど認可されることはない。その一方で次々とユダヤ人入植地の建設は認可され、3000人近い入植者が住み着いた。 「根拠のない逮捕」も住民の生活を困難にしている。とりわけ若者の逮捕は、その将来を破壊する。就学や就労の機会を奪われた若者たちは絶望し、犯罪や麻薬に走る者もいる。そんな劣悪な環境の中で生まれ育った子供たちに遊びや文化活動の機会を作り希望を生み出す活動を続けるNGO「マダー（視野）」。 「シルワン」の現状を通して東エルサレムの“ユダヤ化”の実態を描く。
